Be a Morning Person | Kelly

Something I have always found a bit hard, especially in the colder months is getting up early; I am very much a night owl! That being said though, I do love being up early when it does happen. Recently I've been waking up at around 8 o'clock automatically and although I'm more tired a lot earlier, I find I get so much more done in the day when I wake up early and I feel so much better in myself as well! Here's a few tips I've learned and have been trying to stick to to keep to my early morning wake up calls!

1. Go to bed a bit earlier.
Okay, so this one is kind of a given but you really can't expect to go to sleep at 3am one morning and get up at 3pm and then go to bed at 3am again and expect to get up at 8am and feel okay! I'll admit to watching TV in bed once I do get there and because I like background noise, the TV stays on while I fall asleep but I do try to start to settle down earlier and this is a great help the next morning!

2. Have a hot, but not caffeinated drink before bed.
As a kid, I would stay over at my nan's house every Saturday night and on every Saturday night before bed I would sit by the fire in my pyjamas, have a cup of tea and some digestive biscuits to dunk in and watch a film or programme and then when it was time to go up to bed, I was already pretty settled and nice and warm inside so I didn't have to curl up and tense my whole body for 20 minutes before I was warm!

3. Set yourself a few alarms in the morning.
I find that one really loud, really shocking alarm never does the trick for me so I've started setting three alarms 10 minutes apart to gently wake me up. The first will be a soft, gentle music sound to lull me out of my slumber, (although, this doesn't always actually wake me up). The second will be slightly more upbeat and loud and the third I try to pick a loud, happy song or melody to set me up for the day.

4. Get up when you wake up!
It's all well and good waking up at 8am but if you stay in bed until 11am, even if you stay awake, what's the point? Plus, staying in bed, a place your brain has learned to associate with sleep, will only make you more tired and want to sleep again.

5. Have some breakfast.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, we all know that, but breakfast also gives you your morning boost of energy and will help really wake you up if you're still feeling a little bit zombie-like.

What are your tips for getting up early in the morning?
